The International Alum-Student Service Program at The Cummings School will be returning this June to an animal sanctuary in India called “All Creatures Great and Small” which was founded by internationally recognized human rights activist Anjali Gopalan.
Two first year Cummings School veterinary students, Alena and Alene, have developed summer research proposals to assess the heartworm and tick-borne disease status of the 400 dogs at the sanctuary, and to assess the hematological changes in the corresponding samples. The students will be in India for approximately five weeks collecting data, and will return home to further analyze their data and write their reports. This crowdfunding effort will cover their project supplies and the cost-of-living for the summer.
These student’s summer research projects will provide helpful information regarding medical issues facing the animal population at this sanctuary, and provide a good opportunity for cross-cultural experience. The students will improve their surgical and clinical competency by increasing opportunities for practicing primary care.
By traveling to a foreign country for one or two weeks and working onsite with existing, sustainable organizations in resource-poor areas, we can then help make an impact by energizing these organizations through tangible clinical-surgical skills, and funds which are essential to their work.
