This July 2019, our Global Service Learning team will travel to Zambia to provide free dental care to rural communities that lack resources and access to care. We will work in conjunction with local communities and dental therapists, The Ministry of Health, and the Dental Training School in Lusaka to maximize oral health outreach to the underserved communities of Muchila, Southern Province and Mfuwe, Eastern Province. We are very excited to be working under the guidance and supervision of Dr. John Morgan, who has been working with the Zambian communities since 2004.
We are a team of 5 Tufts Dental Students and we are absolutely passionate about the 3 week journey we are about to embark on. With the support of the Tisch Summer Fellows Program and the Tufts School of Dental Medicine, we will not only be able to provide oral health education and prevention, but also emergency care for infection and pain, fluoride therapy and exposure, and atraumatic restorative treatment. We will also be working with the Muchila Rural Health Center and the Ministry of Health to integrate oral health into the comprehensive health model.
The fundraising goal will be used towards supplies, resources, and transportation needs in Zambia. The project design of the trip will entail going to 3-4 different locations with a different agenda at each location (Dental therapy school in Lusaka, Namwala District Hospital, Muchila Rural Health Center); therefore, the necessary resources and materials will vary for each site.
The funding we raise will impact the quantity of supplies we can take with us to each site (example: restorative materials, anesthetic carpules, syringes, gloves, masks, oral health education and prevention materials). The funding will also enable us to pay for the transportation buses while in Zambia and cover the fuel costs since we will be traveling to multiple sites. In addition, funds will be contributed to the dental therapists that will be traveling with us. Because they will not be working in their respective location, coverage of their daily allowance is required. Collaboration with the dental therapists plays an integral role in our project and creating a sustainable program that will function after our departure.
This project encompasses Oral Health Prevention, Education, Dental Treatment, and most importantly, building Sustainability through direct teamwork with the Zambian team of professionals. We hope you'll consider supporting our endeavor and making this amazing journey successful!
Your donation will help cover transportation costs of traveling from Lusaka Dental Therapy School, Namwala District Hospital, and the villages of Muchila and Mfuwe!
Your donation will help ensure that the Zambian Dental Therapists can come with us to the most rural villages of Muchila and Mfuwe. Their contribution in these places will help establish ongoing care for the people of Muchila and Mfuwe even after we leave.
Your donation will help cover the costs of Oral Health Education and Prevention -- especially for children with decay and disease. This will cover prophylaxis (cleaning), fluoride treatment, and sealants for 30 patients!
Your donation will help cover more than just basic prevention but also atraumatic restorative treatment (Fillings) and extraction needs of 40 patients.
Your donation will help cover basic preventative, restorative, and extraction (surgical and non surgical) needs of 50 patients. With this donation, we will be able to take important resources to provide effective pain relief from infection and disease.
