Thank you! The global service learning dental mission trip will take place October 25, 2019 to November 1, 2019.
We will set up portable clinics in rural communities in Negril, and performing a variety of procedures including: simple/complex fillings (amalgam, composite), surgical extractions (under direct supervision with qualified preceptors), prophylaxis, fluoride sealants, and chair-side education. Our host organization, Great Shape!, operates the 1000 Smiles Dental.
On October 25, 2019, five students from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine will travel to Montego Bay, Jamaica to provide free dental services to communities in Negril. We will be treating over 5,000 local patients alongside our faculty advisor, Dr. Jay Dworkin, and licensed dentists, Drs. Steve and Lauren DiBenidetto.
We are incredibly excited to have the opportunity to serve in Jamaica and provide oral health care to those who do not receive it regularly. One of the main objectives of our project is to improve the oral health conditions of the Negril communities through preventative, surgical, and restorative measures. We will not only be taking patients out of pain through a variety of procedures, but also providing chair-side education on how to maintain oral health daily. We will distribute toothbrushes and toothpaste to provide them with the appropriate tools to care for their mouth.
Jamaica has 3 million persons. 85% depend on public health care system which is woefully inadequate to meet the dental needs of that 85%. There are approximately 1 public dentist to 100,000 residents in the areas where we work. Our impact is profound not only on the individual level, but also on a national level.
