Exciting Campaign Update: Thanks to the generosity of many Tufts Rowing alumni and friends, the new Hudson Super Predator Varsity 8+ is now fully funded! The new shell will be christened at Tufts’ William A. Shoemaker Boathouse on Saturday, April 22, 2017. All alumni, friends, parents, and current student-athletes are invited to attend. The silver and navy Varsity 8+ will be named for Ken Weinstein ('82), former team captain and rowing director from 1982 to 1990, who successfully transitioned Tufts Crew from a club to a full-fledged varsity sport.
Campaign Overages Help Our Coaches: As we have now surpassed our $40,000 fundraising goal, all future campaign donations received will be allocated to the "Tufts Rowing Team Coaches Endowed Fund." This important endowment provides funds and salaries for Tufts' assistant coaches (both Men's and Women's Crew) and helps maintain the consistency and continuity of the entire rowing program. Tufts Rowing—Today: With an award-winning and state-of-the-art boathouse, six coaches, and 60 student-athletes, Tufts Rowing is thriving in 2017 thanks to the astounding accomplishments of Gary Caldwell, former rowing director for 26 years. Gary already has a Hudson Women's Varsity 8+ christened in his name, so our 2017 boat dedication continues a history of honoring former head coaches. Noel Wanner, Tufts current rowing director, and a former member of the U.S. national team, is overseeing this important fundraising project, along with Mark Adzigian ('88), associate director of development for Tufts Athletics. The Fastest 8+ Available: A new Hudson Super Predator 8+ runs $40K and 1991 alums—along with other select alumni—provided the shell's down payment in 2016. The eight was ordered in late December and was delivered in late February 2017, just in time for Tufts' spring racing season. Hudsons are now widely considered the fastest and finest engineered shells in sweep rowing. Cal-Berkeley's Varsity Men's 8+ recently rowed a Hudson Predator to a 2016 IRA National Championship.
