Dear Alumni, Family, and Friends of Tufts Rugby,
In the semifinal match we faced LSU Alexandria in snowy conditions. LSUA had size to their advantage, and quickly went up 8-0 in the first half. We battled back with stout defense, and although LSUA overpowered the scrum, we stuck to our offensive structure and soon scored two tries to go up 10-8 at halftime. In the second half the snowy conditions worsened and the match became a battle for possession and field position. LSUA went up 15-10, but we answered with a try and conversion to go up 17-15. After a tense, dramatic final twenty minutes, our defense held and Tufts sealed the 17-15 victory.
In the championship match we faced Claremont, a team that had been to the NSCRO National Championship finals before. Although outmatched, we played 80 minutes of tough, determined rugby, the same way we had all season long.
We want to thank you for all the support you have given us, and although we did not bring home the national title, we are extremely proud to call our team the runner-up for the NSCRO Champions Cup, and 2nd best in the nation for small college rugby out of 186 programs. To all those who came and watched us play in Colorado, or watched via livestream, thank you for cheering us on every step of the way. We are so thankful to have such supportive alumni, families, and friends. Competing on the national stage was an incredible experience that none of us will ever forget, and it was your support that helped make the trip possible. Although Sunday was a tough loss, we hope you all enjoyed watching us play, especially in the blizzard against LSUA with such a close score until the very end of the game!
Next year, the Tufts Men’s Rugby Football Club will be joining the likes of UMASS Amherst, UCONN, and Fairfield in a newly developed Division I AA league. We hope you are as excited about next season as we are!
