After less than a month, we have raised $10,375 to support the Daily, bolstering its presence as an independent and inclusive platform for student journalism.
The Daily would like to thank our generous donors, whose support will secure a bright and stable future for our newspaper. Not only will we avoid taking out a loan to stay afloat, but thanks to the generosity of our numerous donors, we surpassed our initial goal of $7,000 within short order, so $2,000 of the funds raised will go directly to our Support Fund to assist student journalists with financial need.
We would especially like to thank Tessa Buckley from University Advancement for all of her support and guidance.
The paper's Managing Board and its more than 150 staff are appreciative of the support and trust that you have lent us, and we are eager to start the next academic year with a clean slate and a renewed sense of mission.
Best,
Seohyun Shim | Editor-in-Chief
Sean Ong | Managing Editor
Caleb Symons | Managing Editor
Alice Yoon | Production Director
Alexis Serino | Associate Editor
Joe Walsh | Executive Business Director
We are overwhelmed by the generosity and sense of urgency that the Daily's alumni and supporters have shown. Thanks to all of you, we surpassed our goal of $7,000 within 9 days, averting any need to take on a loan of significant size.
We would like to harness this outpouring of support to build an even stronger paper. For that reason, we have decided to stretch our overall fundraising goal to $10,000. If we reach this amount by the end of June, we will place $2,000 into our Support Fund account, where it will be sequestered solely for the Daily's inclusivity initiatives. Further money raised will form a reserve fund. This will help us navigate short-term financial challenges over the next fiscal year and ensure that, even if revenue for certain papers falls short of expenses or unforeseen capital needs arise, we can still continue normal operations. After we achieve financial stability, we hope to use the remaining money to work on new projects that ensure the Daily's relevance in the digital age.
Once again, the Managing Board of the Daily would like to extend a sincere thank-you to everybody who has donated, forwarded our emails, shared our posts on social media, or lent their support to this effort in other ways. We are confident that, with your help, the Daily's future will be strong.
We are pleased to report that, in just three days, we have raised more than $5000 to support the Daily’s operations, bringing us to about 75 percent of our initial goal. We would like to thank everybody who has donated thus far or shared this page with friends and family. We're grateful for your generosity and humbled by the confidence you have placed in us to get the Daily on the right track.
We can’t afford to slow down yet, though. With your help, we can bring the Daily into the next fiscal year debt-free and build a foundation for a more sustainable paper. Thank you, again, for your support!
Best,
Shim, Sean, Caleb, Alice, Lexi and Joe
The Daily is distributed free-of-charge to more than 40 locations in and around three of Tufts' campuses. Your donation pays for an average delivery location's printing and delivery costs for a single day.
Many readers tell us they enjoy the Daily's print edition in part because of its crossword puzzle. This donation underwrites a month of royalties to our crossword puzzle syndicate.
The Daily's website reaches thousands of people every day with its mix of regular articles, breaking news, and multimedia and digital-exclusive content. This donation pays for about one month of web hosting.
The Daily is fortunate to have a large staff of talented photographers and graphic artists. It costs about $100 to print part of a single paper in color, allowing readers to see our visual staff's amazing work as vividly as possible.
The Daily's early-morning journey starts at some time before sunrise, when our paper is trucked from our printing contractor in Palmer, MA to Tufts. All told, it costs us $175 per day to take the paper from the printing press to dozens of campus delivery spots.
After we submit the paper every night by 1 am, our hard-working printing and delivery contractors spring into action: they convert our paper design into metal plates, run the plates on a press, cut and fold the paper, and drive it from Western Mass. to Tufts. This donation level pays for the printing and delivery costs of one of the Daily's 100+ annual issues.
The Daily is proud to sponsor two inclusivity initiatives: an application-based support fund offering stipends to staff, and a work-study program for upper-level editors who frequently dedicate 20-40 hours to the paper every week. These initiatives broaden the paper's membership by removing financial barriers, which ultimately improves our reporting by making our organization more representative of Tufts at large. A donation of $1,000 pays for one semester of need-based work-study expenses for three executive-level editors.
