Tufts Wilderness Orientation (TWO) is the longest standing pre-orientation offered to first-year and transfer students at Tufts University. Currently in its 30th year, TWO was created as a way to ease the transition into college for incoming students. TWO is a five-day, student-led experience that includes backpacking, canoeing, hybrid, and trail crew trips through which students can experience the great outdoors while creating lasting bonds with upperclassmen leaders and each other.
Why we need your help:
As the interest in TWO grows each year, we face the constant challenge of maintaining a program that is financially accessible for all students. TWO participant fees range from $0-$400, and are based on the financial assistance each student receives from the university. While we work hard to accommodate students for whom we know the cost may be prohibitive, each dollar of aid comes directly from our operating budget. We have reached a place where we cannot afford to give more, while still maintaining a safe and successful program.
The required personal equipment list of items each student must bring on their trip is another cost to the participant that we have identified as potentially prohibitive. The list was created to ensure that each student has a safe and comfortable experience, but meeting the needs of this list can be a large financial burden. Our participants come from a diverse range of locations and experiences in the outdoors, which means their personal inventory of equipment specific to the New England wilderness can be limited. Each year we set aside a portion of our budget to increase our gear-lending inventory, but we are still a long way from meeting the demand of our students.
Our hope is that through this fundraiser we can continue to increase our efforts of making TWO a financially accessible program, while also improving our program in terms of staff training and student experience. By donating to TWO, you will be helping us to cut costs for incoming students by offering more financial assistance to those who need it, while also increasing our equipment inventory so that we can provide more gear-lending to students who may not otherwise have the necessary outdoor equipment.
