STOMP CEEO

This crowdfunding project has ended, but you can still support STOMP here. Thank you for your continued support!

The Student Teacher Outreach Mentorship Program (STOMP), partners Tufts undergrads with local school teachers to create a unique STEM-based curriculum for K-8th grade students. Tufts undergrads work with these teachers to take engineering and the sciences to the classroom, bringing with them the resources and enthusiasm of Tufts. STOMP Fellows are tasked with crafting a curriculum that teaches engineering concepts to their classroom and is accessible to all of their students. Once a week, STOMP Fellows teach students with the help of their teacher, and go deep into concepts that wouldn’t normally be touched upon in a regular classroom setting. These lessons are fun, engaging, and help create the next generation of passionate engineers and scientists!

Since its founding in 2001, STOMP has grown significantly. In its first years, STOMP employed 5 STOMP fellows and worked in 2 local classrooms. This year, STOMP employs 55 STOMP fellows working in 42 local classrooms, and impacts more than 850 students.  As the size of STOMP has grown, so  has the impact we’ve made in the community. STOMPers have been told countless times that students look forward to STOMP days in their classrooms, or that they go home and tell their parents they want to be engineers like us when they grow up. Teachers tell us they learned just as much as their students, and want to keep the engineering spirit in their classroom even after STOMPers have left. It is these kinds of connections that makes the impact of STOMP so strong in the communities that we reach.

This semester, we are in the following schools:

  • Albert F Argenziano School
  • Arthur D Healey School
  • Benjamin Brown School
  • Brooks Elementary
  • Columbus Elementary
  • East Somerville Community School
  • International School of Boston
  • Josiah Quincy Elementary
  • Keverian School
  • Linden STEAM Academy
  • Stratton Elementary
  • St. Joseph School
  • West Somerville Community School

STOMP meets weekly to provide professional development (curriculum development, teaching methodology, technology training, diversity training, guest lectures, and more!) to the STOMP Fellows. STOMP allows Tufts undergraduates to give back to their community, practice teaching, and to learn first-hand how to run a classroom. When we enter the classroom, spend late nights crafting lessons, or listen to other STOMP Fellows discuss a particularly tricky design challenge, we are creating a community that is unique to STOMP and incredibly meaningful to all of the undergraduates who are a part of it.
